Switch on quick – half of spaces on power station tours go in a day

The power station is opening its doors to allow curious islanders a peek at what keeps the island switched on.

Two hundred of Guernsey Electricity’s customers will be invited on up to 10 tours taking place over the next few weeks.

‘Despite only inviting interested islanders to sign up this morning, we have already received over 100 responses,’ said a spokesman.

‘This exclusive free tour of the Vale Power Station is a rare chance to see the system we maintain to bring power to every plug and switch in every home.

‘We want to showcase the scale of the operation at our site, including some of the huge engines that serve as our island’s primary power backup, and the control room which monitors the island’s electricity demand and assets in real time.’

‘It’s a chance to meet the people behind the light switch and have a chat with some of the team keeping the grid stable 24/7,’ he said.

‘We will also be informing people how their daily habits – such as using off-peak electricity – can help reduce local air pollution that could otherwise arise if we need to generate power, and how that support can potentially impact on future tariff increases.’

The standard tour includes some uneven surfaces, metal grated steps, and passages with some small spaces, however there is also an accessibility-friendly option which offers a route with more even surfaces plus awareness around noise.
