Nigel Mboneka, 32, of St John’s Road, St Peter Port, admitted the drink-drive offence when he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

The court was told how officers on mobile patrol had stopped the vehicle in Grande Rue, St Martin’s, at 12.40am after the driver appeared to have difficulty maintaining a regular position in the road and its speed was irregular.

He failed a roadside breath test and an evidential one at the Police Station following his arrest identified 71 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of his breath – twice the legal limit.

He had no relevant previous convictions.

Judge Gary Perry said drink-driving offences had been on the increase in Guernsey for some time, especially those of people who gave readings of twice the prescribed alcohol limit or more.

For that reason, penalties had been increased.

The defendant was fined £1,100 and had his licence suspended for three years.
