Chantel Onyango, 34, of Cordier Hill, St Peter Port, admitted two counts of theft when she appeared in the Magistrate’s Court.

The court was told how the defendant had been working a 5pm to midnight shift at the Total Convenience Store at Les Friteaux, St Martin’s.

Staff were required to do safe cash drops of £250 per time and they would get a signal from the till to let them know when this needed to be done. On the evening in question, the defendant removed two bundles of cash from the till as instructed but put them inside her fleece jacket.

This was seen the next day when CCTV was examined after another staff member noted the discrepancy. The defendant was also seen to appear as if she was completing the relevant paperwork that was required.

She showed little concern and a lack of interest in interview, but then returned all of the money within two days. She told police she did not know why she had done it, though admitted that she would probably have kept the money if she had not been caught.

Judge Gary Perry said the court would always treat cases of theft from employer seriously and many cases would result in sentence of immediate custody.

The community service order was imposed as a direct alternative to three months in prison.
