Affectionately known as the ‘Blogs’ (Blanchelande Old Girls), the former pupils attended the
St Martin’s Convent under the Order of the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary back in 1946.
Anne Thomas, head of alumni relationships and events for the college, said that even through the often challenging post-war years, the group has been bound by supportive friendships which have endured over multiple decades.
‘The ladies would love to extend an invitation and reach out to their peers c1946-1958 to join them at a coffee morning to reconnect and reminisce some more and it’s my absolute pleasure to be able to help facilitate that, while capturing additional detail of the college’s rich history,’ said Ms Thomas.
Adie Wilcox and Meg White both recall mostly happy days at the convent.
Classes were small and a town and country bus would transport the girls to school in their gabardine dresses and panama hats. Post-war meal times were often dreaded, with food still scarce and carrageen seaweed being served as a staple for dessert.
They have vivid memories of the domed chapel, beautifully decorated music room, elocution lessons, dressmaking and gymnastics on the roof, which had been marked with a large red cross.
The coffee morning will take place on Saturday 4 July from 10am to noon at Les Cotils’ library.
There will be a further event on 6 August for 2016-2025 year group leavers.
The summer drinks event will take place at Camilla’s at the Mill, 7-10pm, and will include free food and live music.
Anyone who would like to attend the events, or share their stories for an ongoing memories project, can email alumni@blanchelande.sch.gg or get in touch via the school office on 237200.
