Castel Primary School opened its doors early yesterday morning so students could watch the Sunday night England match with their friends, without having to stay up through the night.
‘It’s really exciting to be able to watch the match together,’ said Ellie Piercey, 10, who turned up to school with her England flag round her shoulders.
‘I really want to see England get to the final but it probably won’t happen.’
Connor McLaughlin, 10, said that he had been watching the highlights of England’s previous games.
Headteacher Peter Curtis said the school had received some letters of request for pupils to be late in for school so they could stay up to watch the match.
‘I wasn’t too keen on it because I think if they were up half the night, it would have been a difficult day when they came in,’ he said.
‘We decided to open up early for anyone who wanted to come in and watch it, and it would be a normal school day for everyone else. There’s a big crowd here which is really good to see. We’re in the business of learning, but actually I think it’s important we take these opportunities to have some fun and create some memories as well.’
