President Sasha Kazantseva-Miller has visited Alderney and met the island’s Economic Development Committee.
They discussed opportunities to work together as well as shared challenges and opportunities, on topics such as connectivity, digital development, tourism, and particularly the importance of reliable transport links for both islands.
‘It was extremely valuable to meet with colleagues from Alderney’s Economic Development Committee earlier this week, and discuss the issues that matter to both islands. Together we are both part of the Bailiwick, and so it is clear to me that we should be working closely together on issues where the islands’ interests are the same,’ said Deputy Kazantseva-Miller.
‘There are a number of areas where collaboration can help us achieve shared objectives, particularly around connectivity, the digital economy and tourism. Strong links between our islands are important for residents and businesses, and we look forward to continuing these discussions.’
Stuart Clark, chairman of the Alderney committee, said the meeting was extremely positive and constructive.
‘It demonstrated how closely aligned our two committees are on many of the opportunities and challenges facing the Bailiwick. Alderney has considerable untapped economic potential, particularly in tourism, digital development and attracting new businesses and residents, but reliable and affordable connectivity is essential if we are to realise it.
‘Through closer cooperation with Guernsey, our long-term ambition is to build a stronger, larger and more diverse economy so that Alderney can once again become a net fiscal contributor to the Bailiwick. I look forward to regular engagement and practical collaboration between our committees.’
Both committees have agreed to continue to work together.
