This year’s team was made up of a dozen young swimmers, who returned with a number of island records and personal bests to their names, tired but elated smiles, and plenty of excellent memories.
They were embraced by proud family and friends at the arrival gate at the airport after the flight from Heathrow touched down.
Among them were Tatiana Tostevin and Molly Staples, two of the island’s leading swimmers who said they loved the Glasgow experience. Both had previous Commonwealth Games experience.
‘I went to Birmingham with Molly last year, and to the Gold Coast beforehand,’ said Miss Tostevin.
‘But it was amazing in Glasgow, just such a good experience, especially having everyone with us.
‘It was really fun. We were waving the Guernsey flags 100% – it’s always great representing the island. The whole place was buzzing, crowds cheering, really good atmosphere.’
The remaining bowls, boxing and athletics athletes, are set to return on Monday, along with the medics and team management. Having returned a couple of days early, the swim team will miss the final medal events and closing ceremony taking place tomorrow.
‘We’re sad to miss it, but you can only stay for a certain amount of days before or after your events,’ said Miss Tostevin.
‘And we all felt quite ready to come home, it’s been so full on. We did the opening ceremony, which was really good – although it was the day before the race, so we quickly headed back straight afterwards.’
Having spent months preparing for the Games, the girls now have other plans for the rest of the summer, and are ready to swap the pool for the sea.
‘I’ve been wearing this uniform every day now for 10 days,’ said Miss Tostevin.
‘I’m so ready for a shower. And then we’re going to have a big long break. Just relax, see our friends, go to the beach and enjoy the weather. I’d love a sea swim.
