The 45-year-old, of Vale Road, St Sampson’s, admitted driving while disqualified when he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court.
The court was told how the original suspension had been imposed in March for dangerous driving and he had also been fined £1,000. One night in June, at about 11.15pm, police officers on mobile patrol at The Quay, St Peter Port, followed a vehicle to La Charroterie where they stopped it following concerns about how it was being driven.
The defendant was the driver and enquiries established that his licence had been suspended.
Defending, Advocate Samuel Steel said his client only had himself to blame for the position he found himself in.
He had gone to town that night to watch football and had arranged for his partner to collect him. When she arrived she was unwell so he made the poor decision to drive her to the hospital himself. Alternatives were available to him and he could have called for an ambulance or a taxi.
Deputy Judge Graeme McKerrell said this had been a pig-headed denial of a court order that had only been imposed shortly before. He was not convinced with the defendant’s story but accepted that the route he had taken was in the direction of the hospital.
Anybody who defied a court order could expect custody as a starting point, he said.
A prison sentence of 10 weeks was imposed, suspended for two years, and the original driving ban will continue as before.
