There were about 110 students in this year’s cohort who undertook the vocational courses and vice-principal Jeanette Hart said that the provisional results showed that in some areas students had achieved a 100% pass rate, including performing arts, creative and digital, health and social care, IT, beauty and business.
Some 30% of them were going to university. But while results day was important, the institute liked to think of it as being part of a journey, she said.
‘We celebrate their results, but every day we’ve made that possible,’ she said.
Among the successful performing and production arts students were Lily Quintal and Lauren Jump, both 19. Both earned distinctions for their work. Lily said her result was better than she had expected.
‘I had worked really hard though and I’m grateful that it paid off,’ she said.
She was staying on for a further year to do a Level 4 qualification, which is equivalent to a foundation year at university, and planned to start auditioning for theatre schools in November.
Lauren, who also earned a distinction, is going to the Cast Studio in Bury St Edmunds to continue her studies in musical theatre.
‘I’d like to go into the West End but they also do screen acting there so it’s the best of both worlds,’ she said.
Business studies student Finlay Adams, 18, had taken an extended Level 3 course and was surprised and pleased to earn three distinctions.
‘I was expecting a merit for the exams but got a distinction,’ he said.
He will be entering the world of work on Monday, when he starts an apprenticeship at Grant Thornton.
‘I was looking for different jobs and I thought that was right for me,’ he said.
Level 1 performing arts student Archie Piper was delighted with his unexpected distinction for his first year of the course.
‘I think we all did quite well as a year. Everyone I’ve spoken to has received merits or distinctions,’ he said.
After his upcoming second and final year at The Guernsey Institute, Archie has plans for university to help him pursue his goal of becoming an acting teacher.
‘I’m looking into acting courses at Chichester and Winchester as well as a few drama schools for some variety.’
