‘There’s been lots and lots of smiles this morning,’ said head teacher Kieran James.
‘As there should be. It’s a huge improvement from last year and we’re delighted. These were the students who started at the old site, and moved across to the new site halfway through, so to get these results is phenomenal.’
One such happy student was Matthew Burke from Alderney.
He secured an A in geography, B in economics and B in maths, meaning that after a summer of relaxing and working at the Braye Beach Hotel, the 18-year-old will set off to study geography at Lancaster University.
‘I’m really happy,’ he said.
‘That A means I will get to study abroad in my third year. It could be anywhere, mainly in the Americas or Australia. We’ll see.’
Also pleased with their results this year was Somchai Blondin, aged 18.
‘I think I did pretty well. I got higher than my conditional offer,’ he said.
He received ABB in English literature, environmental science and sociology, and will be going to Cardiff University in September to study environmental and sustainability science.
A key draw of that particular course to him was the city of Cardiff itself.
‘I like Cardiff and it’s a good area to do environmental science. It’s near the coast, and just up north you have a lot of nature areas too, which is all good for field work.’
A modest Ben Bramley said he had done ‘all right’ after receiving A*AAA. He sat an examination in maths, further maths, physics and computer science, and will be attending Bath University in the autumn to continue his studies in those areas.
He said he had long held an interest in those subjects.
‘I’ve enjoyed them since primary school and I’ve enjoyed them at A-levels too, so it felt like the right choice for me.’
Isobel Sexton, 18, was also delighted with her impressive results. She received two A*s in biology and maths, and was one mark off an A* in chemistry, which she is hoping will change after a regrade.
‘I’m not sure yet where I want to study. I’m looking to take a gap year before I decide – maybe do a ski season and travel around Europe with my friend,’ she said.
‘But I’d like to do something in healthcare.’
The Sixth Form Centre student said moving sites during her studies had been a welcome change, despite initial concerns that the new site was not up to scratch for sixth form students.
‘It was really nice to have our own space this year. Our teachers definitely had more time to spend with us. We were really lucky,’ she said.
