The company is a subsidiary of Specsavers Optical Group and is chaired by the company’s founder Doug Perkins. It was brought on board when there were 92 Guernsey residents waiting for treatment.
After Newmedica reached an agreement with the States in November 2024, the company arranged for some patients to receive treatment in Southampton.
By February the following year the waiting list had dropped to 55 and with the appointment of a new ophthalmologist at the Medical Specialist Group, the agreement was ended.
As well as those sent to Southampton, 136 outpatient appointments had been carried out by Newmedica.
The success of the agreement was mentioned in the recently published report on Key Performance Indicators in the contract between the MSG and Health & Social Care.
Mr Perkins said he was ‘heartened’ to see the company’s support referred to.
Once it learned of the issues with waiting lists, he said it had worked quickly, including setting up an on-island clinic which has proved effective and given ‘excellent patient outcomes’.
‘Some 90 cataract operations were completed on behalf of HSC as part of this short-term contract. We have since seen a number of patients privately and have been incredibly grateful to be in a position to support the Guernsey community in this way.
‘On behalf of all the team, I wish to remind HSC, MSG and the community as a whole that our door is always open if we can be of further support.’
