Mathew Griffith, 27, of Les Bas Courtils Road, St Sampson’s, admitted the drink-drive charge when he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court.
At the Police Station after his arrest he provided a sample which showed 85mcg of alcohol in 100ml of his breath. The legal limit is 35mcg. He had no previous convictions.
Defending, Advocate Sam Maindonald said it had been a stupid and unintended act on her client’s part. He had been out that night for drinks with work colleagues and had entered his guilty plea at the earliest opportunity.
He had come to Guernsey to work as a plasterer and had lost his job through the commission of this offence as he would no longer be able to drive his tools around.
Deputy Judge Graeme McKerrell said it had certainly been a stupid decision. Given the breath reading it would have been very clear to Griffith how much alcohol he had consumed and he would have known he was over the limit.
He fined him £1,000 and suspended his driving licence for two-and-a-half years.
