The nest was spotted by someone walking a few weeks ago.
‘There have been a lot of sightings of Asian hornets in the area, so last Friday we treated the nest with pesticide and left it for a few days so any Asian hornets going back will go into the nest and the pesticide will kill them,’ said Annelotte Baas-Jehan, invasive non-native species policy and coordination officer.
‘We then need to take it down as we don’t like to leave pesticide in nature as the nest could break down and the pesticide will spread.’
A cherry picker was required to remove the nest and it is likely that some branches will have to be cut.
It’s been a busy season for the team.
‘We have had 12 secondary nests and five primary nests.
‘Last year we had eight and our target is to stay at a maximum of 10, but we are really on top of it and we will remove six more nests this week, five secondary and one primary,’ said Ms Baas-Jehan.
She said that she believed there were four more nests that have not yet been identified around the areas of Beaucette Marina, Fermain and Town.
