The islands are in one of two peaks across the sporting year with inter-island fixtures happening every week, including this weekend's high profile rugby, cricket and golf fixtures.
Teams have travelled but many spectators have been left frustrated through the loss of the Islands Unlimited link due to technical issues.
The softball inter-insular, scheduled for this weekend, had to be cancelled. It could now be rearranged for next spring.
Senator Serena Kersten, assistant minister with responsibility for sport since the island’s election earlier this year, told the Jersey Evening Post that she was disappointed that so few supporters would be able to make the trip.
‘These fixtures are an opportunity for local sport to be showcased, to get the sponsors out, to engage with supporters, and after all the effort that goes into setting them up it goes a bit flat,’ she said.
‘It’s not good enough, and it’s something we need to look at – I know [Economic Development Minister] Gerald Voisin is very passionate about tackling this as well.’
Former Jersey States member Jim Perchard, a major figure in the island’s cricket scene, described the current situation as ‘unacceptable’ in a social media post.
Last weekend’s cricket inter-insular saw the Guernsey squad switching at short notice to an Aurigny flight for their morning journey to Jersey and then taking Rib charters for the return leg after the match.
