The court was told how Darren Lowe, 36, of Elworth, Cheshire had come to police attention after he crossed the white line in the middle of the road as he drove along the North Esplanade just after 11.30pm.
They followed and at the Weighbridge roundabout they saw him turn from the right-hand land into the inner lane before going up St Julian’s Avenue.
Officers chose to stop the vehicle after it was seen to mount a pavement there.
Lowe failed a roadside breath test and an evidential one at the Police Station following his arrest showed there were 75 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of his breath when the legal limit is 35. He had no previous convictions.
Defending, Advocate Samuel Steel said this was his client’s first time before a court. He was very upset at what he had done and had been holding back tears when they first met.
He had been in Guernsey for only one week at the time and was unfamiliar with the roads.
Deputy Judge Graeme McKerrell said that given the reading of 75, the defendant must have known, or was very likely to have known, that he was over the drink-drive limit before he got in his car.
He fined him £800 and suspended his driving licence for two years.
