The Policy & Resources Committee has completed the purchase of the properties next to Leale’s Yard. They also include a plot of land and part of a garden. The road, which still needs planning permission, is intended to support new homes and wider regeneration of the Braye du Valle area. It is also meant to ease traffic concerns and improve utility provision and access.
An outline planning application submitted during the last political term, for a road and utilities connecting Route Militaire through the Guernsey Housing Association’s Saltpans site, will now be withdrawn.
More comprehensive plans, including the link to the Bridge, will be drawn up as part of a masterplan for the area.
‘When the States bought Leale’s Yard last year, we said one of our objectives was to improve the transport network in the area, both around and through the site,’ said P&R vice-president Deputy Yvonne Burford.
‘This is crucial for its long-term success in addressing the traffic impact of the much-needed development of the area.’
She said the purchases offered ‘a more comprehensive solution’ than the previous plans and progressing the work was ‘a super priority for the States this political term’.
Atec Engineering will stay in its workshop for the time being while the States help it to find new premises.
‘The regeneration of Leale’s Yard and its surrounding area has been decades in the making and we hope that the commitment made by the States to finally make it a reality will bring meaningful, tangible and lasting benefit to the area,’ said Adrian Marsh of Atec.
He said the business would ‘very much continue to operate’.
Demolition of existing buildings at Leale’s Yard is under way.
UK firm Ridge and Partners has been appointed after a competitive tender to develop the Braye du Valle masterplan. It will work with Guernsey-based CCD Architects.
