Alderney footballers pay tribute following death of islander

Alderney’s footballers paid silent tribute to their fellow islander Hannah Benfield, a friend to many of them, when they lined up to play in Guernsey on Saturday.

Mrs Benfield’s body was found after a search and rescue operation in the island on Monday. Her husband, former island Muratti captain Simon Benfield, has been charged with her murder and has been remanded in custody after appearing in court in Guernsey on Friday.

Thirteen members of Saturday’s Alderney squad live in the island. The team were beaten 4-0 in their Jeremie Cup quarter-final by Grouville from Jersey, in what was a rare instance of both teams travelling to play a fixture.

Extra police officers and some specialist staff remain in Alderney to continue investigations and to provide a visible policing presence. They include officers from the south-west of the UK and Jersey, which provided five qualified search officers from Tuesday of last week.

‘Mutual-aid arrangements between police forces are a well-established and important part of policing, enabling specialist resources and expertise to be deployed where they are needed most,’ States of Jersey Police said.
