The Dementia Perspective, created by the Guernsey Alzheimer’s Association and produced and hosted by former islander, Ollie Guillou of OG Podcasts, won gold in the specialist category at the British Podcast Awards.
And the local team had double reason to celebrate, after also claiming silver in the Heath & Wellbeing category, behind Pete Wicks’ podcast – Man Made.
‘We couldn’t believe it,’ said GAA manager, Julie Thompson.
‘It feels absolutely amazing to have won these awards. It was such a good night, we met so many people, and we are very proud.’
The awards, held at Indigo at The O2 in London, saw the Guernsey podcast up there with some of the biggest names in British entertainment. Its gold win in the specialist category was an Editors’ Choice award selected by judges.
The Dementia Perspective was created to improve understanding of dementia and give a voice to people connected to the condition – from health professionals and specialists, to those with lived experience. It includes contributions from Jan Looijenga, who lives with frontotemporal dementia, and his wife Pip, who speaks openly about her experience as a carer.
Mrs Thompson previously said the association wanted the series to reach people who might not otherwise engage with dementia and to show that, alongside the challenges of the condition, there was also hope and progress in research.
The podcast’s two awards came as the British Podcast Awards celebrate their 10th anniversary, with winners recognised across 31 categories.
