More than 30 children across two Year Two classes took part in the attempt which saw them all pick up a book for 10 minutes during a webinar. There were four sessions throughout the day. For children aged 5-8 it was a reading of Super Uma by Rashmi Sirdeshpande, followed by a draw-along activity with illustrator Nakul Prabhu.

‘During that there is 10 minutes of dedicated reading time, and the teacher will submit the number of children reading which will be included in the world record attempt,’ said Anna Symons, marketing and communications officer at the Guille-Alles Library.

‘There will be schools and libraries taking part across the UK, but this has also been opened up worldwide and it’s a bid for a new record, so there isn’t necessarily a number to beat, just to encourage as many people as possible to read.’

The challenge is part of the National Year of Reading.

Georgie Beharrell, key stage one leader, said the school always encouraged reading and incorporated reading time into the school day.

‘We are huge advocates for reading at La Mare De Carteret, as a school we go “all in”,’ she said.

‘We have the reading suitcases out at lunch and we went all in for World Book Day last year – the children loved it.

‘Today we have 31 children across two classes and they’re all really keen readers, which is great to see.’
