Formed in 2012, Guernsey Air Cadets is one of the newest units within the RAF Air Cadets and meets weekly at Elizabeth College.
‘You get lots of opportunities that we wouldn’t usually get growing up in Guernsey, such as flying or gliding, and also if you’re interested in joining anything RAF-related, it’s definitely a good way to see what RAF life would be like,’ said Corporal Thomas Green.
The 201 Overseas (Guernsey) Squadron is linked to 201 Squadron, a marine reconnaissance squadron based in Scotland which is affiliated with the island.
Earlier this year, 18 local cadets visited its base at RAF Lossiemouth along with 201 Squadron cadets from Macclesfield.
It is thought it is the first time both 201 cadet squadrons had united with 201.
The trip was funded by a £10,000 donation from the Guernsey Freemasons, to give the cadets a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The cadets also go on other trips throughout the year, such as on flying and gliding courses.
It takes young people from Year 8 up to the age of 17.
The open day will begin with a talk from Syd Bowsher as officer commanding.
Cadets will be running various sections to show off the work that they do to visitors, and there will be the opportunity to sign up on the night.
The open day takes place on Thursday at 7.30pm at Elizabeth College.
