Earlier this month the appeal packed its 64,633rd donated item.
‘This is the result of the kindness, compassion and generosity of the island’s residents and of the tireless efforts of the team of the Newborn Baby Hats Appeal – our amazing volunteers Barbara Roussel, Carolyn Stoaling, Heather Reed, Kay Rawlins-Duquemin, Sally Rowe and Sarah Jane Allen, over the course of four years and seven months,’ said appeal founder Lilita Kruze.
‘Only a close-knit community could achieve something so monumental.
‘The time, resources and skills given by hundreds of people, the churches at Castel, Cobo, St John’s, St Mary’s, St Peter’s, St Saviour’s, Torteval and Vale; the Waitrose stores at Admiral Park and Rohais; the businesses like DHL, Guernsey Post, Ferryspeed and Specsavers, the knitting groups at Guernsey Busy Bees, the Women’s Institute, U3A, Les Brehaut Farm, Saumarez Park Residential Home and Rosaire Court & Gardens and La Houguette Primary School to aid Ukraine are significant and are deeply appreciated by families of newborns and children in Latvia and Ukraine.’
Ms Kruze urged people to continue to donate, as every item made a difference.
‘Distressingly, the war in Ukraine launched by Russia continues and we cannot afford to rest on our laurels,’ she said.
Donations for its Christmas shipment will be accepted until Saturday 24 October.
The items must be new.
Toys, blankets, jackets, cardigans, hats, socks and mittens for children under-five will be accepted, along with Christmas cards with a message for a family in Ukraine.
