The new Wildlife Hospital is now completely watertight with the roof completed and the inside now in the process of being fitted out.
‘We’re hugely excited here at the GSPCA, having laid the first brick for the Wildlife Hospital this time last year, to now have the roof completely watertight and the fittings going inside,’ said general manager Steve Byrne.
‘It marks a monumental moment in the fact that we’ll soon be within this Wildlife Hospital, the first Wildlife Hospital in the Channel Islands, the only one of its kind, and it is something for the Channel Islands to be so proud of, especially here in Guernsey.’
Breton has been working on the £4m. project which is now nearing completion, with the Animal Shelter expecting to be able to start using it by the end of the year.
‘I think everybody who works with us is really pleased, it’s been fantastic,’ said GSPCA president John Knight.
‘Breton has worked with us very closely, and we’ve been able to build this and the base for the kennels that will be coming. And that’s all been done with us carrying on our work as normal – it’s a difficult site really to do because both sites have had to be very active. There are many people here building sometimes while we’ve got people coming in and out, animals coming in and out, and we’ve continued operating normally for the last couple of years while it’s been going up.’
The GSPCA celebrated the topping out at an official ceremony at its headquarters yesterday with Lt-Governor Sir Richard Cripwell cutting the ribbon before taking a tour of the new building.
‘We’ve got lots of our supporters, a lot of our builders here today – it’s a bit like watching DIY SOS on the telly at the moment, because you’ll see lots of amazing people who have helped us achieve what we’ve got down there,’ said Mr Byrne.
