Alderney wins gold in Britain in Bloom coastal category

Alderney has won gold in the coastal category of this year’s RHS Britain in Bloom competition, finishing just behind category winner North Berwick.

The judges were particularly impressed by Alderney’s displays and perennial plantings, which had come through the unusually hot, dry summer well.

Jenny Richardson, who led the island’s entries in both Floral Guernsey and Britain in Bloom, was also named a Community Champion. She is one of only 12 people across the competition recognised this year for their individual contributions.

‘This is a wonderful result for Alderney and a real reflection of what makes our island so special,’ said Donald Hughes, chairman of the Alderney Horticultural Society.

‘The gold award recognises the quality of our horticultural displays, while Jenny’s Community Champion award recognises her personal dedication and the tremendous contribution she has made to Britain in Bloom in our community.’

Two judges visited the island in July.

They were particularly impressed by Alderney’s displays and perennial plantings, which had come through the unusually hot, dry summer well.

They were also struck by the strength of community involvement in gardening across the island, particularly Mrs Richardson’s work.

She collected her award in person at the recent ceremony in Rochdale.
