Advice given for bonfire and fireworks events

BONFIRE night is set to light up the island this evening, with public firework displays taking place across the parishes and the island’s only remaining retailer reporting strong demand ahead of the celebration.

Among the events planned for tonight are displays at the 2nd Guernsey Scout Group’s Wayfarer Centre in the Vale, with fireworks at 7pm, and La Villette Hotel in St Martin’s, where fireworks are scheduled for 7.15pm. (35014362)

Among the events planned for tonight are displays at the 2nd Guernsey Scout Group’s Wayfarer Centre in the Vale, with fireworks at 7pm, and La Villette Hotel in St Martin’s, where fireworks are scheduled for 7.15pm.

Further celebrations are planned throughout the weekend, including at Belgrave Wanderers Football Club and La Houguette Primary School tomorrow, St Martin’s Athletic Club at Blanche Pierre Lane on Saturday, and the Guernsey Rugby Club at Footes Lane on Sunday.

Carl Armitage, owner of Standard Fireworks Guernsey, said business had been brisk, with options for buying fireworks locally becoming increasingly limited. His company is now the island’s only remaining fireworks retailer.

‘It’s been very good, busy,’ he said.

‘Everything that we normally sell, plus some other bits.’

The States is reminding islanders that fireworks should ideally be restricted to tonight, although alternative dates up to Saturday are permitted where circumstances, such as bad weather, prevent displays.

Pet owners are advised to keep frightened animals indoors where possible, close curtains and provide a safe, comfortable environment to minimise distress.

Those organising their own celebrations are encouraged to keep fireworks to reasonable hours, between 6.30pm and 9.30pm, and notify neighbours, particularly those with animals or livestock nearby.

All displays, however small, should be registered at gov.gg/events to help residents and animal owners prepare for potential noise.

Fireworks must not be set off in public places, including beaches, parks and roads, without prior permission from the parish constables.

The States has also reminded islanders that sparklers should be handled with gloves, with a bucket of water nearby.

Bonfires are also only permitted until Saturday and must not be used to burn household waste. Organisers are urged to check for hedgehogs and other wildlife before lighting them.
