Deputies in guernseys get a dressing down

STATES members got a stern dressing down by the Bailiff yesterday morning following confusion about the potential for something of a ‘dress down’ day for Wear a Guernsey Day.

Jessica Roland had told members they were allowed to wear the traditional garment in the chamber, in order to raise money for Les Bourgs Hospice, but only if they kept their jackets on during the formal proceedings at the start of the day’s sitting.

Several members ignored that caveat and simply swapped their jackets for their guernseys from the moment they arrived. The Bailiff told members the States was ‘a place of business, where very important decisions were made, and members should dress accordingly’.

She also revealed that she had been approached by Deputy Bruno Kay-Mouat about the idea of the States having occasional ‘mufti days’ to support local charities. Clearly vexed, the Bailiff told members that she had been sympathetic to that idea, but the way her ruling had been disregarded on this occasion was prompting her to think again.
