Leading the cheers for the Games

WITH less than 100 days to go to the NatWest International Island Games finally returning to Guernsey, it really is starting to feel real.

All the logistics seem to be going to plan, teams and arrangements are being finalised and we are looking forward to a week of incredible sport.

Those with long(ish) memories will recall that Guernsey 2003 was an incredible occasion, both for the sport and the way it took over the island.

The only apparent disappointment we seem to have for the Games at this point is the difficulty for supporters to head over and find somewhere to stay once they get here.

Special arrangements have been made for some Games officials. But were we premature, once athletes decided they didn't want to stay in glamping tents at Beau Sejour, in closing that option down and not offering it to spectators?

Guernsey Island Games Association chairman Brian Allen has said he expects to see crowded venues across the 14 sports showcased.

He’s almost certainly right when he says: ‘The Guernsey person is a fantastic enthusiast for sport for the island. I don’t think we have to do a lot apart from lay on all these competitions free of charge for them all to come and see, and they’ll be there.’

Let us hope for a Games mania to grip the island and for the support to go some way to showcasing Guernsey in its best possible light.
