With two key products removed from the dairy counter, what next?

Since you kindly published my letter about the dairy apparently stopping cheese production because of ‘lack of space’, I’ve been contacted by many people expressing their longing for Guernsey cheese to continue, as well as wanting the return of their solely missed, Guernsey yoghurt.

With two key products removed from the counter, one is led to ask, ‘what next?’ Guernsey ice-cream? Might it even lead to the removal of our glorious and unbeatable Guernsey milk to be replaced by imported, anaemic and weak look-alikes?

Given so many other ‘milks’ such as Almond, Soya and Oat, let alone non-diary alternatives from pistachios, buckwheat and so on, surely there’s enough Guernsey milk to allow Guernsey cheese and yoghurt to be produced again?

Our dairy farmers, dedicated to keeping their Guernsey herds as pure a breed as possible, need to feel our gratitude; need to feel cherished; need to feel appreciated.

Or will ‘lack of space’ be shouted as the reason to continue the dairy’s contraction, leading to less milk being required from fewer Guernsey cows, leading to fewer dairy farmers and their herds as they see the writing on wall – ‘sorry – no space available’.

Again, what would the Dragons say to such a poor excuse?

Meanwhile, may I tell a short story of one of our granddaughters when she was three years old? Living in the UK, their local Waitrose ran out of Guernsey butter. That meant a substitute was put on her toast. Tasting it, she cried, ‘That’s not butter!’, as the toast was firmly rejected.
