Letter regarding GST should be required reading

The electors of Guernsey, plus 100 or so candidates for the upcoming States Assembly general election, might find it helpful to read the excellent letter from Peter Rose, concerning GST, published in the Guernsey Press columns on Friday 28 February. The letter should be required reading for all interested parties.

The response from the Treasury was a poor justification for a very bad fiscal policy which is highly inflationary and will have serious repercussions here in Guernsey.

The alternative to GST is to use the existing tax system namely:

  • Income tax

  • TRP

  • Adjusting the existing zero-10 as outlined by Deputy Charles Parkinson

Ideally Deputy Parkinson might be prevailed upon to explain, in very simple layman’s terms, the alterations required to obtain the enhanced tax take without the goose departing the mortal coil. Hopefully, the columns of the Guernsey Press might publish Deputy Parkinson’s short essay covering his nuanced view on zero-10 prior to the general election.

Contextualisation of increasing the above three taxes by reasonable amounts without inflicting pain on the moderate pay cheques of Sarnians is a vital imperative in order to understand the best solution for underpinning the fiscal needs of Guernsey without expanding bureaucracy.

Finally, and more in hope than expectation, wouldn’t it be good for the reinstatement of the Grammar School and doing away with island-wide voting. Reading circa 100 election addresses is no fun.
