The disappearance of Islands Unlimited from local waters for the next couple of weeks seems to signal an unfortunately premature end to what has otherwise been a successful summer season.
The weather has been glorious, there have been positive indications of visitor numbers and numbers travelling to and from the islands – and then in the space of a few days, we get two ferries falling out of action, a terrible fog day at the airport with knock-on effects, inter-insular sport wondering how to move anyone anywhere and cause to reflect, once again, that we sometimes seem to be more poorly connected, certainly with our sister isle, than we have been for decades.
It seems now, after 18 months of waiting, that we will never reconnect a car-carrying ferry service between the islands in any meaningful way.
And those still trying to connect inter-island sport deserve a medal for simply trying. The sad truth is it would probably be cheaper to play Jersey in France, or in Sark, nowadays, than home and away.
For when we do have connections, then the cost often seems prohibitive. Nothing is cheap nowadays, but our ‘Islands of Guernsey’ offering (not withstanding Jersey too) would be so much stronger, for both tourists and residents, if we could celebrate reliable and what we might consider to be reasonably-priced fares between us.
