Woolnough produces one of his best yet
WE WILL have to wait at least a fortnight, until the big open show at Beau Sejour, to see a Guernsey boxer step into the ring and box without a headguard.
James Woolnough, the Guernsey favourite, had planned to go without at St Pierre Park for the Guernsey Dinner Boxing Club promotion on Friday night, but with his Polish opponent choosing not to make this apparently irreversible step into a future amateur career without head protection, it did not happen.
Woolnough still won and Pawel Augustynik proved to be every bit as tough as he was expected to be, but there was a sense of disappointment among some that the expected break with modern boxing history had not happened.
As for the bout itself, Woolnough was pleased with his own performance.
'Everyone was saying it was one of my best fights.
'He was typically European in style but I knew I had to pressure him and outwork him.
'There's been a bit of hype about him, so I was a bit nervous.'
Overall, the home squad were defeated 7-3 by a strong team from Paddy Johns' Bristol gym.
