Whalley's strike puts Guernsey into the third round

A TERRIFIC short-corner strike from Izzy Whalley proved the difference as Guernsey secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Newent yesterday in the Investec Women's EH Trophy second round tie at Footes Lane.

Whalley, who was later named as her team's player of the match as she once again showed her versatility in filling both defensive and midfield roles impressively during the match, drilled an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner in the 31st minute to give the home side a deserved lead at half-time.

However, they had to withstand a huge amount of pressure in the second half as Newent, one of the best sides to play here in the competition, spent long periods camped inside the Guernsey half.

But, with goalkeeper Emma Atkinson outstanding for the Greens and well supported by those in front of her, the hosts stood firm to earn a place in the third round which will be played in the new year.

'It was one of our better performances against a team at the top of their league, which is the highest league teams in the Women's EH Trophy can play in,' said Guernsey coach David Wray.
