Carter and Elmy set for Guernsey debuts
TWO new faces will be in the Guernsey team attempting to wrest the Challenge Trophy from Jersey next month.
Tim Carter and CJ Elmy will be making their inter-insular debuts at La Moye, while the remaining eight of the side have a wealth of experience in the annual clash.
Once availability was taken into account, big-hitting Elmy was one of the six automatic selections through the inaugural Guernsey Men’s Order of Merit introduced by island non-playing captain Danny Vennard this year, while Carter earned a wild card pick from the selectors along with three former island champions in Steve Mahy, Mick Marley and Nigel Vaudin.
‘Even if CJ hadn’t got in [automatically], we would have struggled not to pick him, really struggled,’ said Vennard, who added that Carter’s matchplay performances this season have caught the eye, particularly when he won one-and-a-half points out of two for the Channel Islands against Hampshire.
‘Tim impressed. I gave him an opportunity [against Hampshire] and he totally grabbed it.
‘He has struggled to play in some of the Order of Merit events due to family commitments, which is totally understandable, but looking at his other scoring and how he has played in the Scratch League in particular, showing his matchplay ability, he’s earned his place.’
