Reynolds flummoxed and ‘embarrassed’
A SIXTH straight defeat left Raiders coach Jordan Reynolds flummoxed rather than furious on Saturday.
London Irish Wild Geese were deserved winners at Footes Lane, with the 20-17 scoreline a misleading representation of the game after Guernsey scored two converted tries in the final five minutes to snatch a losing bonus point when even that had looked highly unlikely after the visitors scored their fourth try to open a 17-point lead.
‘We are really embarrassed for ourselves,’ said Reynolds.
‘We get really good support down here, we are just underperforming and we are not underperforming by a little bit – today that’s an underperformance by about 70%.
‘It’s hard to say I don’t think we deserved there to be only three points in it because I think we worked for it at the end and got ourselves in that position, but as a reflection of the match, absolutely not [a true one]. It could have easily been 30-3.’
Those late tries, scored by Dom Rice and Owen Clemett and converted by Henry Greenhalgh who had earlier kicked a first-half penalty, ensure Raiders remain 14th in the National Two South table, just a point ahead of Wild Geese who have jumped above Birmingham & Solihull Bees.
Reynolds’ mood was not improved by having some key players limp out of the action.
