Webb produces the heroics as Guernsey make history
IT REQUIRED a grandstand finish – albeit on a ground without a stand – for Guernsey to make history on Saturday afternoon.
Hope of holding all five senior CI rugby trophies at the same stage seemed to be ebbing away on the club pitch at Footes Lane with Jersey leading 15-7 heading into the last 10 minutes and playing with the wind at their backs, but the home side dug deep and pulled off a comeback that will live long in the memory.
Firstly, Darrin Bellingham forced his way over for his second try of the match to get his side back within three with six minutes to play.
Then, having regained the momentum, big lock Brad Webb had his teammates and supporters in raptures two minutes from the end, making the most of a slip from a would-be tackler to breakaway from deep inside his own half and storm down field, shrugging off the covering defender along the way, to score a magnificent individual try worthy of winning any game.
He emptied his tank in doing so, quickly motioning to his coach Matt Chammings that he had nothing left to give and needed to be replaced for any final Jersey onslaught, but the job was done as GRA sealed a 19-15 victory.
