After two days of brutal wind that made for tough scoring conditions at La Grande Mare throughout the quarter and semi-finals, the weather played ball for the showpiece occasion and allowed both Chapman and his room-mate for the week, fellow pro Max Penney, the opportunity to show their class.

They did so in style, making a combined 11 birdies on a night when the better-ball score equated to 10-under-par and Chapman had an eagle putt at the last that would have given him a sub 60 round.

The fact that he won by the narrowest 1 up margin emphasises what a terrific show they put on for the gallery, who became more absorbed with each quality shot – and there were plenty.

‘It was a bit windy those previous two days and if it’s as windy as that it gets to be a little bit crazy golf,’ said Chapman as he walked off the 18th green.

‘Ideally, you want to be playing in these sort of conditions [calm and sunny].

‘Me and Max work so hard throughout the year to make sure we are able to capitalise when the weather’s like this.’
