Tremlett shatters 15-mile TT record
SLICING a hefty chunk off a club record with a James McLaughlin pedigree would have been a dream feat for most domestic time-trialists – but not for Seb Tremlett on Sunday.
Despite removing a whole 96 seconds from the ex-professional’s previous mark in a rare 15-mile TT outing, the ambitious Tremlett did not return to Rousse fully satisfied.
His 30min. 36sec. clocking came on a morning also featuring two new age-category records from star veteran Aaron Bailey.
Following a spell of broken training that culminated in him choosing to skip the British Championships, the winner conveyed mixed feelings when asked how he felt about his performance.
‘The usual – not really happy with it,’ said Tremlett with a slight chuckle.
‘My training went really bad the whole of May... but it was more about getting back to form.
‘I was not expecting much and I really did not put in a good performance but after the turn-point, there must have been a ridiculous tailwind and it dragged me home.
‘Although, I’m probably selling it a bit short,’ he admitted, enjoying the opportunity of riding a 15TT in the thick of the season.
Second-placed Bailey sped to a superb 32-15, giving him the edge on friendly rival Tony Bleasdale’s 32-22 but more importantly, updating his records in both the V40 and V45 categories.
His time had come within three seconds of McLaughlin’s old mark and was nearly a minute faster than his record-setting victory in the season opener in March.
Top woman Karina Bowie nearly echoed Bailey’s accomplishments, coming close to her own age-group markers with 37-03.
Marina Bleasdale rode well for second lady, covering the course in 38-21.
Bailey and Bowie had earlier taken starring roles in last Friday evening’s 5TT, placing top man and woman as the former lowered the V45 mark to 10-30.
