Jersey doubts but ‘Hundred’ coming

THE 2021 junior inter-insulars have fallen by the wayside – and the senior matches may yet follow suit.

Guernsey Cricket Board chief executive Mark Latter has confirmed that the ongoing travel restrictions between the two islands has led to the cancellation of the U11, U13 and U15 games that had been scheduled for next month.

The women’s inter-insular – a T20i tri-series pencilled in for 24-25 July – and the men’s inter-insular on 21 August are also in doubt and dates as late as 11 September are being looked into, depending on the fate of the ICC CWC Challenge League B that Jersey are due to host from 1-14 September. ‘Obviously with all the uncertainty over travel still and rise in cases here and in the UK, we are having to take a pragmatic view on what we can and cannot achieve playing-wise for the rest of the summer,’ Latter said.

‘While no one ever likes cancelling matches, to get some certainty into the season end we are seeking a full domestic on-island programme to keep everyone involved and looking forward to training and then playing.’

To fill the void left by a second season without a CI League and with the Odey Wealth Weekend Championship now going to the final round, a 50-over GCA Cup has been scheduled in late July into August.

Meanwhile, the GCB will be bringing the concept of ‘The Hundred’ to the island with a 100-Ball Challenge Cup after the completion of the Odey Wealth Evening League One season, culminating in a Finals Day on Saturday 28 August.

‘As can be seen from the announcements on the EL and WL programmes, there is still a lot of cricket to play this year,’ Latter said.
