GFC embarking on intense schedule

THERE is no let-up for Guernsey FC for the rest of February as the games come thick and fast.

They have half-a-dozen to play in the next 17 days, starting at home today to in-form Binfield – a side they face twice this month – but the Green Lions are boosted by the return of more players to their squad.

‘When you look at Joe Alvarez coming back and Tom Martin having served his suspension, in terms of resources we seem to be in a good situation to deal with that long haul of games,’ said GFC manager Tony Vance.

‘But the biggest thing about it is the need to get points and the home games are vitally important.’

Binfield are back in Isthmian South Central’s top five after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Uxbridge on Tuesday night when the ‘Moles’ were behind until six minutes from time and finished the match with 10 men.

With only one defeat from their last 10, Binfield are firmly back in promotion contention, but Vance has been pleased with his side’s recent displays against other top-five sides, including last weekend’s narrow defeat to Northwood, whose first goal came via a handball that was not picked up by the officials but was clear on the video footage.

‘They say decisions level themselves up over the course of the season, but our level is very wonky at the moment,’ Vance said.

‘But in the last four games we have had two wins and two other really good performances where we have deserved a point at least, probably four.

‘It was not that long ago when we were not getting results, not performing and had no squad depth, so in terms of morale and thought processes within the squad, it has definitely shifted.

‘Our expectations now are completely different to what they were at the turn of the year and that’s credit to the players.’

  • GFC v Binfield kicks off at 2pm today.
