They started well, seeing more of the ball than their visitors, but did not create as many chances as they would have hoped, and when the Cross Keys were on the ball they looked the more dangerous of the two teams.

There were few clear-cut chances for either side early on, the exception being when Saints’ Tito Guimaraes shot towards the bottom corner and it went just wide of the far post.

Guimaraes had another chance to put his side ahead in the 22nd minute as George Mason crossed the ball into him, but he headed straight into the hands of St Peter goalkeeper Chris Haskins.

Half-an-hour in, a good chance came for St Peter as captain Luke Lister went one-on-one with St Martin’s goalkeeper Seb Sheppard, but his initial effort came off the crossbar before he tried again, and the ball was cleared.

Lister had another good chance in the 37th minute, but Sheppard was equal to the threat, helping the effort up and over the crossbar.

Saints managed to get themselves ahead five minutes before half-time, as Frazer Maginnis made a good run down the wing and crossed the ball into Guimaraes who headed home.

Minutes into the second half St Peter, struggling in the Jersey Premiership having won the title just two years ago, won a free kick in a dangerous position, just outside the penalty area, but Elton Atat was unable to make it count and sent the ball high over the crossbar.

Saints then had multiple opportunities to score from set pieces.

In the 55th minute Eti Le Prevost’s free kick was cut back to an unmarked Maginnis, who tried to get the shot away, but could not connect.

Guimaraes stepped up to take another free kick 68 minutes in and found Mason who headed the ball over the crossbar. In the 81st minute, Haskins saved Le Prevost’s next dead-ball effort comfortably.

Not long after, though, Le Prevost set up George Goubert, and the young wide player drilled his shot into the bottom corner and double Saints’ lead.

Rovers and Sylvans play their quarter-final ties against Jersey opposition next weekend. North are already into the semis.
