Bohn emerges victorious in battle of two teenagers

Eighteen-year-old Georgina Bohn withstood immense pressure to win the Guernsey Rifle Club’s annual Summer Prize Meeting.

The young English shooter was pushed all the way by 19-year-old local marksman, Alexander Stewart, with the teenage pair in a class of their own over the three-day competition.

The meeting was once again at full capacity, with an array of visitors including Bohn and her fellow Great Britain under-19s, plus smaller groups of shooters from across the UK and Jersey.

The opening Coca-Cola and Star shoots at 300 and 500 yards on Thursday morning were won by GB veterans Nick Brasier and Stephen Penrose, respectively.

From then on, though, Bohn and Stewart pulled away from the rest of the field and became locked in a two-way battle for the Grand Aggregate.

The pair finished first and third in the three-range Ex-Servicemen’s on Thursday afternoon, with Bohn scoring a remarkable 105.17v out of 105.21v to Stewart’s 105.15v.

In the two-range O’Toole on Friday morning, Stewart set a new match record of 100.18v ex 100.20v, yet finished only narrowly ahead of second-placed Bohn on 100.16v.

At the halfway point in the meeting, having fired 61 shots each, the pair were tied on the exact same number of points and central ‘V-bulls’.

On Friday afternoon, the duo’s dominance was briefly interrupted by another GB under-19, Amelie Weinberger, who scored the only maximum score of 150 out of 150, with 21 central ‘V-bulls’, in worsening conditions to win the Bisset trophy.

Bohn placed second, scoring 148.20v to Stewart’s 147.20v to pull out a one-point lead over her rival going into the final two shoots on Saturday morning.

In the first of the final morning’s shoots, the 500-yard Castella, Stewart managed only 70.8v ex 75.15v in a difficult gusting wind, leaving the door wide open for his younger opponent.

Bohn capitalised, seemingly unaffected by the buffeting conditions as she calmly slotted in a 75.12v to win the Castella and extend her lead to six points going into the final distance.

Stewart rallied for the 600-yard Le Maitre, dropping only his penultimate shot for an impressive 74.12v – just one point behind the winner, Scott Glanville – as he tried to overturn the deficit.

However, the Guernseyman’s efforts proved to be in vain with Bohn posting an assured 72.8v at the longest distance to win the Grand Aggregate and take home the Bruce Parker Trophy.

Over three days of competition, Bohn dropped just seven of her 121 shots out of the bullseye for a winning total of 598.84v – four points clear of runner-up Stewart.

Stewart’s grand total of 594.84v secured him some consolation in the form of the Australia trophy, awarded to the highest-placing Guernseyman in the Grand Aggregate.

There was hot competition for the B-class Grand Aggregate, the Bluebird Trophy, but it was Matthew Stewart who emerged as the overall winner on 581.57v.

Bohn only recently finished her A-levels at Gresham’s School, one of the UK’s leading shooting schools, where she first picked up a rifle.

The school’s shooting master, Freddie Grounds, was particularly proud of his former student’s performance under pressure.

‘Georgina is an exceptional person who has always produced extraordinary performances, no matter how much pressure she is under,’ he said.

‘She showed a huge amount of resilience and strength of mind to shoot to such a fantastic level.’

Peter Jory, Stewart’s former shooting master at Elizabeth College, was similarly impressed by the two teenagers’ performances.

‘It’s a fantastic win for Georgina, which was the culmination of a number of years’ training. She was pushed hard by last year’s winner, Alexander, who was also a GB under-19 when he won.

‘Having been involved in the GB training programme as a coach, it’s really good to see the next generation develop and become accomplished shots.’

After the individual events, a friendly team match took place between the GRC and the GB under-19s, in which the locals emerged as winners with 1,140.101v to the visitors’ 1,119.98v.

The meeting concluded with a barbecue on the GRC’s clubhouse lawn, overlooking Fontenelle Bay, after which the winners were presented with their trophies.
