After a positive start for the Green Lionesses, with the prolific Calleigh Hedley scoring in the third minute, Stoneham proved to be one of the toughest opponents that they have faced so far in the campaign and equalised in the second half, with neither side able to find a way to clinch a victory at Victoria Park on Sunday afternoon.
‘I think honestly we’re really disappointed not to come away with a win,’ said Gauvain.
‘I think that’s probably one of our strongest performances for a while. Obviously we’ve got results against other teams and we knew that was going to be tough, but I think the girls performed particularly well today.
‘Using the substitutes as well, everyone played their part. On another day Calleigh may have had a couple more and Aimee [Ogier] hit the bar, but yes it was really positive.’
One stand-out player on Sunday afternoon was young goalkeeper Alana Hockey, who made a number of crucial saves on her home debut.
‘Fair play to Alana. She has come in again and made some really good, important saves and hopefully she’ll take some confidence from that,’ said Gauvain.
The Green Lionesses remain unbeaten in the Southern Region Women’s Division One South and will travel to face Andover New Street next weekend in the hopes of keeping that unbeaten run going.
‘We played Andover before, a couple of weeks ago, so we’ll have a look at where we can get some joy against them next week, have a look at who is fresh after today and hopefully go again with a strong side and keep our unbeaten run going.’
