In what has been an extraordinary year for Guernsey football, with Sarnian professionals Maya Le Tissier and Alex Scott both being part of successful European Championship campaigns at international level, the Guernsey Press accolade recognises outstanding achievement on home soil and the first Muratti day at the new home of Guernsey football, when Victoria Park was awash with green as both the men’s and women’s teams emerged victorious on a memorable day.
The women’s team kicked the day off coming back from behind to beat Jersey 2-1, with both Guernsey goals coming from Hedley in quick succession before the men came out with a 3-1 win over a Jersey side who had won the previous five Vase finals.
There were two goals from first-time Muratti captain Allen and the other came from Charlton Gauvain.
‘I mean, it was a dream day, right?’ said Allen, who won the Ossie Eloury Memorial Trophy as man of the match for the fourth time.
‘I think we all hoped that we’d get days like that down here when this place was being built and when we saw it.
‘For it to happen for both the women’s and the men’s teams, it was a dream come true.
‘I think no matter what happens now, we’ll always look back on that day as being one of the most special days in Guernsey football history,’ he added.
The women’s team retained the trophy after winning it for the first time in 16 years at Springfield in 2024.
‘It was amazing – I mean, the year before it was in Jersey and obviously we won it there, but to win in front of a home crowd it was the most surreal feeling,’ said Hedley.
Le Tissier is the only footballer to have previously received the Press award, which was inaugurated in 2003.
She won it in 2018 after making history by playing in the U16 Muratti before pursuing her professional career.
