The Guernsey star, who topped Section B having won her first four of five matches in the group stage, was up against Malayasia’s Emma Firyana Saroji in Saturday night’s semi-final at the Scottish Event Campus and despite dropping a shot on the opening end of the match, she went on to dominate the first set with 11 unanswered shots to make the final two ends of the scheduled seven redundant.
The second set was much closer, though, with Saroji taking a count of three on the fourth end to take a 4-2 lead only for Merrien to respond with a full house to move 6-4 ahead.
Saroji narrowed the gap by one going into the final end, meaning she needed at least two shots to force a tiebreak, but it was Merrien who took two to clinch a memorable 11-1, 8-5 success.
The final will be a clash of two reigning world champions as the Sarnian will face top England player Katherine Rednall, who overcame Shae Wilson of Norfolk Island 7-4, 4-9, 1-0 in the other semi-final. The gold medal match is scheduled to start at 1.15pm on Sunday.
