Chloe de la Mare, 16, has moved up to 329th globally in the FIP rankings after making it to the quarter-finals of the Rathbones Island Padel tournament in St Clement.
She and regular partner Rosie Quirk went out in the quarter-finals after being drawn against the top-seeded pairing of Teresa Navarro Lopez-Barajas of Spain and Virginia Riera from Argentina – ranked 54th and 35th globally.
Older brother Liam enjoyed an inter-island partnership with Jersey’s Aaran Eastwood and ended up rising from 2,337th to 1,260th in the international rankings.
They went out in the round of 16 to a strong Spanish pairing of Javier Lopez Parra and Manuel Valcarcel Sanchez, who shot them down 6-0, 6-1.
But they had earlier scalped the No 7 seeds, Spain’s Mario Huete Hernandez and Gonzalo Rubio, 6-1, 6-2.
That emphatic first-round victory just so happened to have taken place on Liam’s 18th birthday.
‘Obviously here, on home turf for him [Aaran] and pretty much home turf for me, is an unreal experience,’ the Guernsey youngster said.
‘To get that first-round win is just special – two local guys taking out the seventh seeds, which seems pretty amazing.’
The Gomes twins both played and lost in the round of 32.
Cameron nevertheless saw his global ranking lifted to 1,175, while Luke climbed dramatically to 1,933 from outside the world top 3,000.
n CHLOE DE LA MARE held her own against two players in and around the world top 100 before suffering a loss in the round-of-16 at the Hiscox Irish Open.
Partnering Ainhoa Rico in the women’s doubles, the Guernsey starlet received a walkover past the round of 32.
She then faced the tournament’s fourth seeds, Rebeca Lopez Lopez (career-high world ranking of 72) and Blanca Arriola Cerrejon (102).
Despite the tough draw, de la Mare and Rico produced an outstanding performance, coming from 3-0 down to take the opening set 6-3.
The Spanish pair responded to claim the second set 6-1, before a closely fought deciding set.
De la Mare and Rico held an early break advantage, but their opponents battled back to take the final set 6-4.
