Following illness, and what he called an ‘embarrassing and dreadful’ European Championships showing, the 26-year-old ran 48.65sec. in Switzerland for his fastest time in more than two months and his joint-highest finish recorded at a Diamond League event.
Unusually, neither of the men’s hurdles events were classified as featured Diamond races, but the Guernseyman still lined up in an international field headed by American great Rai Benjamin.
Benjamin prevailed in a meeting record 46.67, but the following positions proved tight as athletes’ previous times suggested, with Turkey’s Ismail Nezir clinching second in 48.08 ahead of Qatar’s Bassem Hemeida third in 48.17.
Chalmers had held third over the opening barriers but got edged back in a race where every competitor went under 48.75sec.
