On Sunday morning, the 18-year-old was flying across the line in 80min. 34sec. – a time that makes her Guernsey’s fifth-fastest woman ever for the distance – before early that afternoon jetting off to Bath University in a move that bodes well for her future in athletics.
The Chalmers brothers, Lee Merrien, Dale Garland, Tom Druce and Abi Galpin are among an all-star cast of Guernsey athletes to have previously studied at Bath.
Although Jamieson said she was ‘really excited’ for the new chapter, it certainly did not overshadow a performance where she had gone in simply targeting an Island Games standard – 87-45 for B or 85-10 for A. Even that would have shattered her previous personal best of 91-05.
‘I feel so happy,’ she said on the finish line at North Beach’s East Arm.
‘I wasn’t expecting a time that quick. I was hoping for a PB, and to get a standard for the Island Games.
‘I didn’t want to go out too hard, because I did that last year, so I ran at a pace that felt comfortable and when I got about half-way I saw how I felt and was like “Go for it”.’
The resulting run was, as put by her dad and overall sixth-place finisher Matt Jamieson, ‘not a bad way to say a la perchoine’.
Although the inclement conditions were not welcoming to spectators, competitors could benefit mildly from a net tailwind for the L’Eree to North Beach course.
