Having gone through a tough, injury-hit September which saw them suffer four defeats in a row, the Green Lions subsequently turned the corner with three consecutive victories culminating in a 3-1 win on the road at Newhaven 11 days ago before having a rare weekend off. Manager Tony Vance took the opportunity to get away for a holiday and on his return to the island yesterday his response to being asked whether the rest was good for his squad was, ‘I will tell you at 3 o’clock tomorrow afternoon.’
‘Sometimes you have got momentum in football and we were on a roll, so you want the games to keep coming, but that extended period has been pretty relentless, so maybe that weekend off was a nice thing for some of the players. It certainly was for the coaching staff,’ he added.
The Green Lions are currently seventh in the table, but just one point off third. Today’s visitors Little Common are one place off the bottom with two wins and a draw from their 11 matches so far, but Vance is taking nothing for granted.
‘I think they will be tricky. While they are down near the bottom, they have had some good results and we must never underestimate them – or anyone,’ he said.
‘I think they will come here to be as much of an annoyance as they can and will try to win the game.
‘What we have to do is focus on ourselves and our game. We are starting to build momentum and build our way of playing. Hopefully we can keep pushing forward.
‘Anyone right from 12th or 13th can make a push for the play-offs, so every point is going to be important from now until Christmas, when we can see where we are.’
GFC against Little Common kicks off at 1.30pm today at Victoria Park.
