No Guernsey hotels in TripAdvisor's top 10

GUERNSEY hotels failed to make it into a popular travel website's top recommended places to stay in the United Kingdom.

The TripAdvisor 2014 Travellers' Choice awards were announced yesterday and, although two of the top 10 came from the Channel Islands, Guernsey did not have a single entry.

While the Channel Islands are not part of the UK, the site has included the islands in its awards.

Alderney's Braye Beach was the islands' highest entry, coming sixth, one ahead of Jersey's Longueville Manor.

Staunch TripAdvisor critic and Fleur du Jardin owner Ian Walker, however, said the website should not be taken too seriously.

Reviews which heap nothing but praise and those which pour nothing but scorn should be viewed with suspicion, he said.

'I tend not to give it too much credence, it is not a balanced view. It is an open forum for people to have a go. They sent us an award saying how great and wonderful we are, and I put a sign on it saying they are leeches on society.'

But Braye Beach general manager Richard Proctor was delighted the hotel had placed so highly in the list. Internet feedback sites are increasingly relevant over traditional methods of accreditation, he said. 'You ignore them at your own peril,' he said,
