Around 15 people walked from South Esplanade in Town to the Bridge for the 'Walk for Weed' protest march yesterday. The group brandished signs and posters calling for the legalisation of the Class B drug. One sign claimed legalising cannabis would see economic growth.

Four police officers escorted the protesters on the walk but said they were there only for road safety purposes.

Walk organiser Yhan Savident, 22, said he wanted to do a march to raise awareness of his and others' beliefs.

'I don't think you should be prosecuted for something that is natural and helps so many people,' he said.

'It has many medical purposes and can benefit so many people – people need to realise that.

'Alcohol kills people but cannabis doesn't.'
