L'Ancresse Common paid parking row may end up in court

A LEGAL battle is likely if any attempts are made to introduce parking charges at L'Ancresse Common, the Culture and Leisure minister warned yesterday.

Deputy Mike O'Hara raised the alarm over the possible introduction of long-term parking fees at any one of 16 car parks, as part of the Vale Commons Council's new 'user pays' policy.

The minister also pledged to broker a deal between the council and the golf clubs at L'Ancresse, with the parties in dispute over plans to impose a steep rent increase.

Planned changes also sparked anger from householders who fear falling property prices after hearing of fresh plans for parking charges at the Vale Church site – less than a year after the courts threw out a terre a l'amende application.

Deputy O'Hara, who believed that any deal between the golf clubs and the council was a long way off, said the council could face stiff opposition to bringing in parking fees.

'I think that would be challenged enormously from a legal point of view,' he said. 'I would have thought it would be very much challenged and not looked at in a good light.'

His warning came as the Vale Commons Council unveiled plans to increase rent paid by the two golf clubs from the current £100 a year combined, to about £90,000 – around 900 times as much.
